for the billionth time, the USA could have been first at everything in space, except for two reasons. first, we cared about the safety of our astronauts. secondly, we wanted sputnik to overfly the usa so that the huge undecided question as to where air-rights ended would be moot.

you did have more powerful boosters than us for a few years, i will grant you that. but in every other way we were way ahead of you.
>>
It wasn't a race with a clear finish line. More like a state of things between two countries. One of them withdrew eventually. Counting "firsts" is tricky and just a pure oversimplification.

Don't forget the hesitance of the US Navy to give its rockets for space research too. That delayed a lot of things the most, I think.

Otherwise, USA would quite easily crush Soviet Union, hard.

And that's considering the most important half of our country was obliterated during WW2 and we lost millions of people, while US was completely intact and even profited from it.

I highly doubt that the US will rush into this and risk another explosion with men killed.
So SpaceX is going to take at least 5-10 years and hundreds of unmanned flights before the first person will get a chance.

Only because SpaceX is launching nicely now it does not mean that they will shoot fat assed 'Muricans into space next year or so.

Though last weeks landing of the 2nd stage on this ocean platform in Florida was amazing engineering.
But the mission control room filled with "USA USA USA" shouting apes was a bit disappointing.
I highly doubt that only Murican engineers worked on that.

I think this is the real reason that we claim to have won the space race. as cool as orbiting the earth is, and as dangerous as it is, it's still like a fancy flight to us.

but when you look up at the moon and try to imagine walking around on it, that's a whole nother level of awesome.

I heard an anecdote once that ballpoint pens came about because NASA had a need to be able to write in 0G and wound up spending a ton of money to research the best solution they could find and invented a new kind of pen. Russians sent a pencil.
Something to be said for both approaches, imo.

That's retarded. Pencil graphite dust would get everywhere and fuck up the then delicate electronics in the machine. Also ballpoint pens were invented in like the 1950s.

>>
>>70726543
It's true, actually. I'll admit it.

While this image is a little facetious in downplaying the man on the moon accomplishment, the Soviets, for all their faults, had much more vision than America did. Were far more willing to sacrifice and sweat for this final frontier. America's space program was only ever a reaction to theirs. While we performed admirably when the time came, we never managed, as a state, to take the initiative. That is America's perpetual problem: No real vision. That's why after the Soviets fell, interest in our space program evaporated as well.

Soviets were basically attaching rockets to dishwashers and putting people inside.
Less cosmonauts have been killed by India's space program.
>>
just gonna leave this here
Deaths in space: The Soviet space program also suffered the first, and so-far only, deaths in space in 1971, when cosmonauts Georgi Dobrovolski, Viktor Patsayev, Vladislav Volkov died while returning to Earth from the Salyut 1 space station. Their Soyuz 11 craft performed. You made the first space station but failed to get the crew back. America won
>>
The end goal of the space-race was to get a man on the Moon.

The U.S. did it first -- and have been the only to do so.

So, yes, they did win.
>>
>>70732867

oh please. we burned three astronauts to death on the ground trying to test a radio. and then we launched a frozen space shuttle against the advice of the engineers and killed 7 more.

and then 7 more when something something fell off or whatever.

space travel will not be routine, not for a long time.

why is that? because JFK?

the goals: orbit a satellite, orbit a man, go to the moon, go to mars, go to the rest of the solar system, go to the next star, etc. etc.

the end goal of the space race is to leave the solar system before the sun burns out. period.
