Colonialism, and by extension white people, created economic conditions in Africa that caused an explosion in the slave trade. This led to the creation of the slave kingdoms, which, following the abolition of slavery in the west, collapsed into tribes that had VERY GOOD reasons to hate each other.
Let's not forget that slavery depopulated Africa. Even if they had been left alone after abolition they would have had to accomplish what Soviet Russia did (transition from agrarian to an industrial economy) in under 60 years (assuming you put the end of the slave trade in the 1890s).
Russia's industrialization cost the lives of some twelve million people. The cost to Africa would have been horrendous.

Neo-colonialism took advantage of the chaos, this time in the guise of "private investment" and the IMF. Once again, the Africans were slaves but this time to capitalists who thought they were doing good while getting rich.
Then the tribes with a little bit of money from the resource extraction business started buying weapons and killing off their rivals.

The colonies were an economic boon to the European colonizers, it didn't cost them money to be there that would be pants on head retarded and most countries didn't give up their colonies until 2 decades or longer after the end of wwii
