Grant had multiple bills passed over his veto. Congress could pass bills with a supermajority after the Civil War because Republicans literally made it illegal for Confederate veterans to vote, so their pet niggers and their handlers in the South elected a huge majority.
These laws, excluding anyone who had aided the Confederacy from voting, provided a seemingly significant impetus to the formation of the KKK and other paramilitary groups in the South. Because whites were prevented from voting, they went to great lengths to prevent blacks and Republicans from consolidating their hold and fundamentally changing the South. I think the failure of reconstruction and the regional/racial animus that persists today are in large part due to overzealous Radical Republicans.
Anyway, I think the reputation of Lincoln, like any assassinated leader, benefits from the fact that he did not live to deal with Reconstruction. I'm certain he would have done a better job than Jackson, but his own party was already turning on him, and it would have been messy. But his political capital and established executive control might have allowed him to come through okay.
Now imagine anyone else stepping into that role: the country is in a shambles, you haven't been elected to the office of the president, the south would hate you even if you had been legitimately elected, niggers are running wild in the streets, Union soldiers stopped caring about anything but killing Confederates in 1862, there's awful class tension, etc etc. Jackson was president at literally the worst time in the nation's history.
