If you're just passing through, Missouri isn't all that bad. You can find some good food and night life on both ends of the state, in St. Louis and Kansas City. I guess Branson is an interesting place to be, too. I wouldn't make it a point to hang out in most of the rest of the state, though.

list of worst places: the vast majority of the south, the vast majority of the midwest, every small town that relies on one industry for the majority of jobs, all of west virginia, all of southwest california, any place run by mormons, new york city unless you're a millionaire, large empty states like kansas, cities and states where sports are the only thing to talk about (this is largely synonymous with the midwest), any place where there are >0 fat assholes on scooters, nascar rallies, and everything else about boston and philadelphia
