It's called indentured servitude and that is actually the means by which most of the earliest settlers arrived here, most never living through their contract. A dispute with one such indentured servant, who happened to be black, to keep another indentured servant, also black, is also how the institution of full on slavery came about in the former colonies.

The fact remains that we know very little about what Natives actually were. We only got interested in finding out this information after most of them died off. It also doesn't help either that the remaining ones mixed in with Europeans. Most of the North American Indians sparing Mexico didn't build lasting infrastructure either and their culture was mostly oral tradition.

IQ is basically a measure of abstract reasoning skills. The determining selection factor for that is agriculture, which the cholos don't really have a history with, in comparison to mongoloids. With that said, northern latitudes also have a slight influence, and you see stronger visual spacial abilities in say the inuit or the eskimos than almost every other population, with a fairly strong abstract reasoning for non-agricultural peoples.
