Been to Dominican Republic. Had the opportunity to visit Haiti but turned it down in the last minute.

Once you realize that Haitians overthrew the French, then realize that the French claimed Haiti, it's easy to see that with less than a third of the landmass on the back side of the island, overthrown before developments could bring centralized power and legitimacy to a government, and that most of the inhabitants are black, then it makes sense why Haiti seems indistinguishable from Equatorial Africa.
Also the DR has lots of productive farmland and generally a more positive attitude. I'm black and my dad is Trinidadian, which apart from Jamaica is the only other black majority Caribbean country that is worth it's weight, and the Dominican Republic is not far from either of those really.

OP is Puerto Rican. The thought of Dominicans or Dominican Republic sends Puerto Ricans into a fit of impotent rage because historically, they consider themselves superior to us because they are a "wealthy" colony, and are "white" while they see us as meager blacks. However, the tides are reversing, DR economy is the fasted growing and more stable economy in Latin America while Puerto Rico is in debt and fleeing, and this really pisses them off because now they have nothing.
