Solar panels are quite honestly shitty for the region though. They're fragile, their power density is so low (i.e. expensive to ship on planes), and even if you somehow theoretically converted 100% of the captured sunlight into electricity, you still would have 3-6 months of darkness. Any achievements made in manufacturing in remote areas would be an important precursor to space colonization. Countries have been trying for years to inhabit Antarctica for example, with Argentina going as far as sending civilian colonists to live there permanently. In all cases, all polar settlements and research bases on both sides of the globe have remained heavily dependent on their homeland for supplies up to the present day. It's a shame we approach northern development from the perspective of haggling over perpetual government assistance. It's an old worn out idea and most people can't even conceive of the notion that the north could become an independent self-sustaining region with the right technology.
