Sayans are described as bloodthirsty brutes and only amnesia or forced cohabitation with the more wise and good hearted humans make them able to become truly strong, hence Goku getting super Sayan because of a human friend, Krillin, getting killed.

There was a reason why the Super Saiyans were legend, because they were from a time when their race had actual ethics and convictions beyond just savagely killing left and right; when the drive to accel beyond themselves for the sake of those around them are quelled by only raw impulses, ultimately leads to stagnation.
The drive to protect and prevent more lives lost is what caused Goku's ascendancy to such levels.

This is bullshit though. Gohan would be far stronger than Goku or Vegeta if he actually trained and wasn't turned into a beta by Videl. Goten and Trunks also reached Super Saiyan status with minimal effort when they were children, something which their adult fathers struggled greatly to achieve.

I heard somewhere that the reason goten and trunks went super quickly was because super saiyan genes get passed on after transformation. Since gohan was conceived before goku turned super saiyan, he didn't inherit those genes.
