Islam is spread through conquest. In Islam there are two "houses" that exist in the writings - a house of peace which means a country which is majority Muslim and run under Sharia and a house of war which literally means everything that is not under Islamic law. It is a Muslims duty to conquer the house of War through Jihad and make it a house of peace. It's also a Muslims first duty to retake lands which were once under Islamic law but have been taken back by other religions or governments, which is what we are seeing now with IS trying to reinstate the Caliphate or the old Ottoman empire.
