He was also the best man for the job, uniquely suited by training and temperament to manage the scientists, the engineers, and the military.
Very interestingly, on the German side, the notorious Werner Heisenberg, who was actually the smartest physicist on the planet at that time by far, famous for making Einstein sound stupid in arguments, was in charge of the Nazi Atomic bomb project, and he purposely obfuscated and sabotaged his own work to keep the bomb out of Nazi hands. He did this personally and at the utmost risk to himself and his family, and managed to stay one step ahead of everyone working under him for years until the war finally ended.
