It's the best available option until an actually competent third party starts... because let's fucking face it, the Libertarians, Greens, Constitutionals, etc are all fucking incompetent. Going Independent is the closest thing available to a protest option to express your dissatisfaction without just up and switching to the other side of the two party problem.
What we really need is a moderate political party.
A third party is going to form out of one of the existing mainliner alternatives. As incompetent as they are, they have the infrastructure, and organization. They also have core ideologies as a starting point. You aren't going to herd cats and make a 3rd party out of thin air.
Part of me wants to republican party to collapse so create a real opening for a 3rd party for the first time ever. If the Libertards appropriated a few Trumpisms and got a LITTLE bit more populist, they could catch the republican defectors. The party would get more competent as it would have to accommodate non-purist ideologues. The fucking austists might throw a fight though and fuck it up.

I think it would naturally be the Libertarian party. They have the only platform that can apply to a portion of republicans and democrats. Their core ideology is fine as long as the autists insist on continuing to treat the party of a political science club, and actually allow the platform to have some flexibility as new voices flood in. I think the Union is still useful, we shouldn't have the nation of Texas fighting the nation of New England or the Nation of Florida abandoning the constitution; all examples really, not saying anything specific other than we should be like what European empires turned into.
Because what that ends up as is a single nation, like Germany which is run by communists, secretly controlling everything else. Because maybe the breakup of a too big to fail government is "natural," but so is the slow build up of empires just as natural.
