SKS is a good choice, or a cheaper AR15. Try giving a better description of what you want. Caliber, action, manufacturer, intent for use.
OBREZ

Seconded, kills AND cooks your food at the same time.

Shotgun, it will fill all utility roles including home defense, hunting small and big game and you can take it to the trap range for fun
Its a cheap and easy to learn weapon, after you get that you can start trying to figure out what rifle you want
A polymer semi auto pistol in 9mm would also be a good choice

Depends on where you live and what your familiarity with firearms is, also if you want a longarm or handgun, answer these and I will give you an answer.
Get an AR, goddamit I wish I could hunt with mine.

If you are looking into a pistol, I would highly recommend the CZ-75. The p-01 variant is excellent.
No safety, just a decocker. Trigger is a little rough from the factory, disassemble and polish it up.
If you have more money to spend and don't care about concealed carry, a Sig p250 is bretty decent. Expensive, sadly.
Rifles: Surplus mosin or SKS is nice, but prices have been going up lately.
You can usually build a decent AR for $600 or so.
