Franks were a german faction from what would be today (and they were there then too) western Germany.
Franks took over Gaul from the Romans occupation but they did now populate the land.

There have been tensions between Franks and "French" for millennia. The line from the Marseillaise which goes like this - "qu'un sang impur abreuve nos sillons" refers to Frankish blood, which was common among the aristocrats. It had a class dimension, too.
