I used to like Snopes until I saw a page about something Trump said about immigration, obviously marked as false or mostly false, and the writer spent a huge portion bashing Trump for things completely unrelated to immigration. Not as bad as Politifact but still bullshit

Snopes isn't relevant to the discussion. The vast majority of their articles are pretty impartial.
Perhaps you are confusing them with Politifact.

Snopes actually banned me a long time ago for proving them wrong about an "old wives tale" about a dish of soapy water being an effective mosquito killer.
They claimed it was false, because, "although a mosquito that landed on the water would be done like dinner, there is no reason at all for mosquitoes to do such a thing."
I pointed out that the start of a mosquito's life cycle is aquatic, which is why draining swamps and eliminating pools of stagnant water is so important to controlling their population. If the only available source of still water happens to have soap in it, mosquitoes will try to land on it to lay their eggs, and they will die.
The response I got back was basically, "We are SCIENTISTS and if such a thing were true, we would know it. Since it is really just propaganda spread by the military industrial complex to excuse the destruction of protected wetlands, we can only assume you are a paid PR flak who we do not need spewing your toxic waste on our site."
tl; dr even before they were progressive assholes, they were still authoritarian assholes
Reality.

All "fact check" websites are political steering gimmicks; there's simply no such thing as neutral "facts" in the realm of politics. Snopes often takes a neutral stance when leftist/progressive/liberal facts, while being more likely to focus on and "debunk" conservative or right wing "myths". All of these websites essentially sprung up at the same time, and many have since been purchased by political operatives. Most of the staff of these websites have left leaning biases, but don't make any effort to state who they are and what their likely biases are. There's no person writing the articles for us to evaluate for bias, and this basic lack of transparency invalidates these sites from the get go. The person producing the fact checking is central to the fact checking and any degree of "neutrality" it might be trying to achieve -- these sites are highly opaque, more so than most mainstream publications; at least when you read the NYT or washington times, you know the author and their writing history, bios, past political activism, etc.

Snopes had nominally right wing founders, but never should have gotten into political coverage at all.
Anything, any group not absolutely conservative by it's very nature will be taken over by liberals sooner or later. See: National Review

Post things that purport
Snopes isn't that bad.
They definitely turned more political and certainly left-wing recently but they're honestly not too bad.
They're good for non political things 99% of the time and most of the time for political things, too.
>>70576793
citation needed? Lots of articles have an obvious left slant but this doesn't sound like Snopes at all.
Like how here they flat out deny that Time interview meme about Trump saying Republican are dumb
http://www.snopes.com/1998-trump-people-quote/
or here they show how the picture showing Trump supporters being racist is fake
http://www.snopes.com/make-america-white-again-trump/
Or here we see them defend Trump against outlandish accusations. Honestly they're better than 90% of news outlets that continue to spew this sort of drivel.
http://www.snopes.com/donald-trump-jesus-muslims/
Context, folks. I'm not saying it's a liberal feminist site but they at least have more integrity than 90% of liberal media outlets.
