People never learn in school that this map is a projection. You can't project a sphere onto a flap surface without distortion, with this map projection the further you move from the equator the larger the distortion - areas close to the equator being properly sized, and areas far north and south being remarkably stretched. In other words, the scale on this map is only works horizontally (East-West), but the vertical area (North-South) is largely over-represented and stretched to look WAAAY bigger than it actually is.
The reason this projection was, and is, used is because you can draw a rhumb line on it: A line from Point A to Point B, where if you take your compass direction in mils/degrees you can continue on that same projected line without having to change your course. It is immensely useful for navigation, so it is the most popular map projection that spread. But it has also fucked with people's heads, most of the world has a mental image of the world that is completely distorted and wrong. Since Europe and North America are largely above the Tropic of Cancer (23 degree from the equator), they are much larger compared to other areas on the map than they actually are in real life.
So Westerner's have this distorted view of their countries being larger than they actually are, and not understanding at all how fucking MASSIVE Africa, India, and South America are.

Look at Peru, and look at France. Here, almost the same distance across and looking like they are both around the same size.
Reality:
Peru: 1.285 million km2
France: 643,801 km2
France is half the size, and it's not even that far north, and Peru isn't even exactly on the equator. So most of the world (including you guys) think that the land mass of Europe and North America is literally 2x as large as they actually are.

For fucks sake, all of Europe from England to Greece could fit inside the land mass of the Indian Subcontinent alone. The size of the Island chain in the far east between Australia and Asia is almost the entire of North America vertical height of North America!
