How the FUCK do Americans make so much money, every time there's a thread about money or jobs the American posters are always making $70,000+ USD a year even when they're a recent university graduate, they can actually afford to buy houses too.

It all comes down to the cost of living in your area

I live outside of Boston, make 80k/yr, and barely have enough after taxes and loan payments to actually do anything. Meanwhile, I have friends who make in the range of 30k-35k who can afford to travel because they live in a more rural area and didn't go to college to get raped in loans

They paved the way for globalised capitalism, which put an end to the old national, protectionist model. Also they elected Reagan who shredded the Keynesian policies which allowed for mobility and wealth in the post-war period.

A renovated 3br averages 100 grand. A repossessed double wide goes anywhere from 20 to 80 grand. A DIY renovation project can go anywhere from 30 to 50 grand. Rural areas will always be cheaper to live than in the cities.

To an extent.

You're almost always better off going white collar if you can though. Most trades fuck up your body long term, pay decently but not amazingly, aren't the most interesting job in the world, and have no transferable skill sets and almost non existent promotion/development opportunities. You're also increasingly at risk of Juan replacing you for a fraction the cost.

The reason trades aren't more popular isn't just because people look down on them, or haven't seen this brilliant opportunity, it's because there's a hell of a lot of downsides.

Houses are cheaper outside of heavily urbanized shitholes. Buy a house in a town of 20 - 50 thousand.

Older houses in decent condition sell for like 40 - 80k here in my town of Seymour, Indiana. I'm sure in rural parts of Canada, housing and land is relatively cheap just like it is here.

I know city slickers are deathly scared of moving out to a more rural area, but housing and the cost of living in general is extremely cheap here.

And chinks inflating our housing prices.
>>
I personlly don't believe everyone posting on pol is making 70k out of college.

Incomes have been stagnant for a long time, it's getting difficult for a lot of people to even maintain middle class status.

One thing the US has going for it in spades is a cost of living advantage.

Everything there is just cheaper than most other developed wnations due to economies of scale and increased competition.

A dollar goes further in the US than almost anywhere else. this has a real effect on overall living standards.

That said, the poor down there seem to be desperately poor in a way they aren't in other developed nations. They just seem REALLY down and out, and you just know they won't be getting back on their feet any time soon… barring a big lottery win
>>
America has a higher percentage of its population under the poverty line than any other first world nation, what the fuck are you talking about?

>>70569697
You know what, the real question is, what are reasonable conditions to opt for "cheap rent"? The cheapest rent I know of in my city 400 a month, BUT, like I wish I could show you pictures. It's so run down that the windows are broken, broken glass and bottles everywhere, no yard maintenance, undoubted trap-house activity and shootings and so on and so forth. So as I said, 500 is still unheard of to live in somewhere that isn't life-threatening.

maybe if 70k was your AGI, but if you actually made 70 grand gross you would likely have spent it on many things that yield deduction.

hell even if you didn't have any special deductions you get 8 grand anyway.
but if you're in an income tax state, odds are your deductions long form will be higher because you can deduct your state income taxes.

"41%" is actually 41% of your AGI over a certain bracket (i think 50k last time i looked?)

so it's really 41% of 70k - 50k - 8k.
so 41% of 12 grand and like 20% of your income 20-50
