Sadly, most commodities are not produced in excess therefore, there will never be enough to go around equally and if they were distributed equally, the quantities received would be basically unusable. What good is coffee if you dont get enough to brew 1 cup? What good is real butter if you dont get enough for 1 piece of toast? So the leaders began hoarding the commodities of luxury for themselves. This creates a massive disparagement in living conditions between the population and the 'party leaders'.
In theory both communism and socialism would be quasi-utopian environments but the problem is that you can never sate human emotions or desires. Even if you gave everyone access to any material possession in existence, jealousy would still exist.
