Shit that's kinda reflected in the earlier versions of D&D he had a hand in. Your abilities like strength and intelligence were randomly rolled, every class had different experience tables for progression, and there was little effort to balance them for combat. Also each race was limited in class choice.
In the newer version where he is not involved, choosing your abilities with a point buy system is pretty standard, all classes progress at the same rate, and there are tons of attempts, though not always successful, to make every class balanced. The races are still pretty different, though now they can all do any class.
Also I can't find it right now but in one of these posts he basically says that female D&D players are a small, small fraction of the total players that mostly show up solely for social events like conventions and theorizes that it's a difference in the male and female brain. (and says this was true when D&D was a mainstream Walmart thing and much bigger than it is nowadays)

There's a lot of ways to play online nowadays.
Roll20.net, Skype, IRC with Dicerollers, Fantasy Grounds, MapTool, etc.
Editions of D&D vary a shitton in playstyle. (basically prior to 2E it's the same game with some different quirks, afterwards it's different game each edition)
I recommend starting an account on Roll20.net, using their group finder and looking for groups that a) welcome new players (it's a button) and b) match up with your free time & timezone.
Systems they currently have up on there that are relatively simple to learn to play as your first game:
Labyrinth Lord. (clone of Basic D&D)
Swords & Wizardry. (clone of Original D&D)
AD&D 1st Edition & 2nd Edition.
