Because not much gets shipped through the Mediteranean. Shit gets shipped over the Channel to London and Rotterdam, and to New York and California. The Med isnt much of a shipping lane. South East Asia is where most shit gets shipped from, so bypassing the Med would be a pretty good deal for Russia.
