Can someone explain to me how 'left libertarian' isn't a contradiction? Leftist ideals of collectivism are inherently incompatible with libertarian ideals

This guy is correct. Libertarianism was not analogous to minimalist government until recently and mostly in the US. Libertarianism is rooted in the idea of maximum liberty, but that need not be negative liberty. Advocates of positive liberty support redistribution of resources, among other things, as means to "free" people from "internal restraints". This necessarily means capturing the labor of others, i.e. slavery, but advocates of positive liberty have no qualms with that.
It is similar to the use of "liberal" in the US today referring to something completely different from and often opposite to the original meaning, which is now called classical liberalism.
