You missed my meaning. War is usually a waste of resources on both sides. More generally I was referring to your sentiment being in tandem with that of a teenage boy full of ambition and testosterone but no proper direction or masculine figures to guide them into making good use of their time and energy. Looking into the face of terror and fighting for survival are romantic but they're also a waste of time and effort in most situations. That may seem like a strange statement but it's really much more plain than it at first seems. It is true that there can be an objectively correct and incorrect direction for society to go in, but only after a society has decided on a finite set of crisp and unambiguous goals. Afterwards anything that doesn't contribute to those goals can be disregarded. In most cases sustained military campaigns and unnecessarily difficult daily life for the members of a state are not conducive to those goals.
I implore you to read this paper and take anything from it that seems correct and discard whatever you find to be false. It contains elaboration on the points above but also a more objective analysis of the phenomena of governments and states.

If all those threats were made good on at the first sign of transgression then the human race would go extinct.
