I'm from LA and I love it. I pay $525, have a very well paying catering job which mainly caters to high profile photoshoots (worked with Megan Fox, Kristen Stewart, etc.) and I pursue performing and composing music as well as acting. I pay $525 to live in Highland Park (semi-Mexican ghetto slowly being gentrified by hipsters) with 3 other people, some creative types and 9-5ers.
If you choose LA or maybe SF be prepared for the hustle, man. There's tons of people out here who'd swoop in on your job if you fall behind. Other than that the nightlife is awesome and the people are cool because everyone has big dreams, go out all the time because that's what you are really paying rent for. You never know who you could meet, I've gotten plenty of gigs through meeting people on the scene.
However if you're not a creative/entertainment type I don't know why you'd want to move here. Traffic sucks and there's Mexicans/homeless everywhere, a lot of ugly ones. Grew up in LA and living in SF now. I have friends who graduated college two years ago and still don't have jobs and not for lack of effort. One friend has a bachelor's degree and is working at Target as a cashier, living with his Mom. If you're by yourself, you MAY be able to get by on minimum wage by sharing an apt with someone in a decent neighborhood. Otherwise you're gonna have to live with beaners or nig nogs in the hood.
