Because public debt is really not analogous to private debt. It's not meant to be paid off, and in fact, if the federal government paid off all its liabilities there would be no financial system.

If oil producing nations were to use a different currency for the trade of oil, our economy would collapse, Libya was beginning the push to trade in gold, the US, France and England swooped in and look how good things are there now
What causes our debt to decrease is a strong GDP, been about 1.5% for the last 7 years per quarter, they always announce 3 to 3.5%, then in 3 months they revise it down to 1%, 1st quarter this year was touted as 3%, now the FED is admiting it is closer to .01%
When Obama leaves office the national debt will be higher than the GDP, first time in history
Tell me what we manufacture in the US to sell to the world, nothing, the trade imbalance, what we buy vs what we sell is all one sided and not in our favor, what do we make anymore, Movies, Apps and "Idea's", no nation has ever prospered or continued to, without a major segment of it's GDP coming from manufacturing
Where does most of our GDP come from, selling shit to each other, we borrow money to buy crap we don't need, save nothing and just like the government we kick the can down the road and hope for a miracle
