the current industrial age of abundant cheap energy (fossil fuels) is slowly coming to an end, it has been now since the 1970's. there's absolutely nothing you can do to reverse or stop it. never before in human history have there been such vast quantities of cheap energy thanks to fossil fuels. it has allowed the world population to grow at unprecedented levels. it has allowed for tremendous increases in the quality of human life.
the world population will massively decline. whether it will be through war or slowly by declining birthrates. we may enter a new dark age (like happened after the fall of the ancient roman empire) or we enter the futuristic age we've all been dreaming of (only with a much smaller population). either way this process takes 100+ years so we'll all be dead by the time that happens.

Like, I was born in the fall and grew up in the country, y'know? And a lot of people don't like it when summer has to end. But I do. It's harvest season. You don't know what the winter will bring, but you at least know what your stores will be like. There's this rush of activity but it's not as hot as in summer, there are fewer bugs, and though you're out in twighlight more, there's this pleasant nip in the air that is perfect for when you're working harder. And the days are clear, and the sunsets are beautiful.

In the past week China announced MAJOR breakthroughs in genetic modification technology, and have made huge strides in cloning over the last year. Meanwhile, it took the west a decade to get over the moral qualms involved in stem cell research. Because the common man in the west has way too much sway over his government. If he doesn't understand something, like embryonic stem cells, he can shout at his government loud enough to slow progress.
In Asia the government doesn't really give a fuck. If there's potential, they will investigate it, morality be damned, for the most part. Take Singapore for example. Same ruling party for its entire history, and yet in half a century that party guided them from a tiny fishing village to a sprawling economic metropolis. Because dissidents who needed to be silenced in the name of progress were, allowing progress to be made.
Liberal democracy is outdated. It is applicable only when the affairs of the world and technology are within the mental grasp of the common man. That is no longer the case. The world has grown far, far, far more complex than the average person can comprehend. Thus the average person's opinion is pretty much irrelevant to policy making. You need a government like the Chinese have to say "fuck you, we're doing it anyway and you'll thank us later" instead of bowing and bending to the will of the uneducated, distracted, and uninformed masses.
