I know how you feel, I was in a similar situation two years ago.
First off hit the gym. I've found that working out regularly has positively impacted all areas of my life; I'm stronger, have more endurance, I'm more focused throughout the day, I'm more confident, hell, I even sleep more soundly. Also, try to get out of the city; on weekends I like to go for hikes in the forest. The air is better and it gives you time to think and plan.
Beyond that, set a tangible goal that you can work towards. My interest is in life sciences, and my goal is to earn either an M.D. or D.O. degree. I completed several high school credits I didn't have, and this fall I'm starting a nursing degree. My goal is to become a nurse practitioner and work my way up from there. I believe that one aspect of success that is often overlooked is networking. You have to go out on your free time and leave a good impression on as many people in your field as you can. One of my goals as a nurse will be to foster as many positive professional relationships as I can with doctors and nurses so that I'll have a network of contacts who can give me references and tell me about opportunities when I'm approaching the higher levels.
Don't worry about how long it will take. You have the rest of your life. Time spent worrying is time wasted, do something to fix the problem instead.
One book I'd recommend is "The Fine Art of Small Talk" by Debra Fine. It's got a lot of good tips on how to interact and converse with strangers and develop meaningful conversations. She breaks down everything you need to do to in a social interaction.
