Why did the u.s gubmint go so hard on this kid? He got 35 years and a 1 mill fine for downloading academic papers illegally. Fucking nuts.
>>70462470
He caused systems to crash and broke into an off limits area. He also stole materials that cost people a lot of time and effort to make. He was a criminal and his guilt got to him
>>70464116
His offense wasn't even a criminal offense. He was selectively prosecuted with an additional criminal charge that literally everyone is guilty of.
>>70462470
Beyond the fact that he's a lying, stealing Jew, he also created reddit.
>>70464269
Why was he breaking into off limits areas and trying to steal digital media? Theft is theft even if you claim it for a noble cause.
>>70462470
Scapegoat and example of those who broke the controlling mechanisms.
Scientist here, my field is biology; molecular, cellular, developmental and neurosci.
It takes a loooooong time to do experimental research that culminates in a successful research publication, and we literally get paid shit, like classified as low-income workers in many large cities kind of shit. So, when a high paid tech worker decides our hard work should be devalued even further it does burn my ass a little bit.
That said, 35 years is too high. But, I don't understand his endgame either, most papers that are worth a damn are free to read. The ones that aren't are pretty damn cheap to access anyway.
I'm sure he was focused on research not in my field, which I then know nothing about. But in biology/medicine, wherever you work has access to most publication resources, and I would say the majority of authors are more than willing to personally respond to e-mail inquiries about almost anything. When I was an undergrad I e-mailed a PhD about his work and he just sent me a file of a few of his related publications free of charge.
So, I don't know what his Robin Hood shtick was about, it's not like esoteric papers are useful to anyone sitting at their PC without access to a research facility and the associated memberships to access the content.
>>70464116
>He also stole materials that cost people a lot of time and effort to make.
He gave the public access to the science they've financed. Nothing wrong with that. To the contrary, it's what's supposed to happen.
>>70465460
> The ones that aren't are pretty damn cheap to access anyway.
30$ for a 4-page paper (normal price in most natural sciences) is cheap to you?
>>70466395
$20/mo to access all of JSTOR's content
$30 is absolutely on the high end of accessing a single paper.
I have never seen a 4-page research paper in my field, I'm sure they exist, but I doubt they are $30, or even useful.
And to put it into context, $30 is about how much dinner and a beer or two costs in my city.

He didn't "get" anything. They threw the book at him in order to send a message. It is extremely likely that the charges would have been modified later. However, since redditors operate on feels instead of logic, he decided to fucking kill himself rather than become a martyr for his cause. What a faggot.
>>70462470
Never trust a redditor
>>70462470
heavy handed spic female states attorney basically
bitch is a dried up cunt

>rather than become a martyr for his cause
common themes for 20 somethings
i feel the same. i suppose his depression contributed, he always said he felt isolated.
>>70467251
Martyrs die for their thing. That's the whole point of martyrdom.
>>70462470
Cheap Sephardi merchant.
They had to widden the coffin for those ears.
>>70467667
ok george
because you didn't understand his point. better to correct his usage so everyone can comprehend... no, you actually just called him wrong and said nothing to correct it like a good proper tea sucking faggot
EFF can't shut the fuck up about him and it pisses me off

because the state is controlled by capitalists and disseminating information to the masses destroys the market.
an educated population destroys the market. that's capitalism for you.
>>70465460
here we have a scientist supporting a system that exploits anon, against their own interest. what a supreme jackass. simply admitting the sentencing was too much is middling. he did nothing wrong.
>>70467008
isn't that only if you're a student?
it should be for everyone. why isn't available and spoken of in all public libraries which our taxes pay for?
It is fucked up that billionaires can get away with crashing our economy, but someone who downloads some files is fucked for life. Corporatism at its finest.
>>70467667
Whoops. Basically I was just trying to saying that had he not killed himself he could have easily become a hero and helped further the cause. Instead he pussied out and became a martyr for no real reason.
>>70468536
$19.50/Mo is the individual access rate for unlimited reading, but limited PDF downloads.
Also, many, but not all, libraries DO have access already, you can simply use the library's PC that has a subscription.
They offered him 6 months of prison time, and he rejected it.
>>70469246
What a faggot. Did he seriously think that his life would be over after that? He would have become an icon.
What was his reasoning/defence? These papers are in an electronic format so they should be free for everyone everywhere?
>>70462470
teacher jews, and university lawyer jews, thats why
>>70468451
>an educated population destroys the market
lmao this gommie
>>70465460
Aarons point was that public funds were being used to conduct the research so the public should have access to the reports. Which is a fair position to hold. If the government wants to take money out of my check and spend it in the lab, thats great but then dont turn around and deny me access to the data you collected. Not to mention, this occurred under the obama administration, the supposedly "most transparent administration in historys" justice department
>>70467008
>$20/mo to access all of JSTOR's content
But i already paid for it when I paid my taxes. How about this, give me all the money the federal government has taken from me for this program back, and then Ill gladly pay the $20 per month fee to help finance that organization.
Here's another thought.
The tech world is a scary fucking place of oligarchs in-waiting. Hand over all of your data to US, you evil companies making a profit, so WE can have everything on OUR site and WE can make MORE profits.
Imagine a company like Facebook/Apple/MS/Amazon, or even Reddit, in control of the entirety of scientific knowledge.
I do agree that publicly funded research being housed behind paywalls is a complicated issue, but I don't want the tech world in charge. Might as well just let there be a government run(and funded) repository and be done with the whole thing.
thats a long time to get sent to prison, didn't he have jewish connections that could have bailed him out? damn.
Only a certain social class is supposed to be permitted to obtain knowledge. The real crime he committed was refusing to be marginalized.
>>70465460
People who do not have access to research facilities can use the information. Not everyone can afford school or even has the option to go but we all benefit from those people being has highly educated and well informed as possible
>>70467008
So 20$ may seem like not much to you buy some people can not spare 20$ right now and limiting their access to knowledge until they have more free money benefits nobody. We humans should spread useful information as far and wide as possible
>>70467008
>That's not the point. The real point is that publishers get crazy margins on those numbers, and the actual authors (professors and intellectuals) only get to lick their shoes, at best.
Imagine Michelangelo painting the Sixtine Chapel with 95% of the money going to the guy who built the wall. Even worse, no one is even building stuff here - JStor Elsevier et al are just fucking instruments, retarded assholes who are extorting profit out of smart people actual intellectual work.
This is not right.
Pay smart people thinking clever stuff, not the monkey that binds the fucking books goddamnit
