Russia is the eastern anchor of the western world. It's a big role, and we need Russia to be strong so it can fulfill that role, holding northern Eurasia in a future filled with Chinese ascent and migrant pressure in western Europe.

Russians and Americans have far more in common than differences. I think part of our rivalry is some unresolved sexual tension tbhf.am. Russia has enough land and resources to never need to deal with the world outside of it. China, with over a billion people has been eyeing the annexation of "manchuria" which includes large swaths of Siberia where there is large amounts of fresh water and resources.
Americans and Russians had a cold war, but we respected the honor and intelligence of our adversary to never commit to the mass destruction of the other. Cooler heads prevailed and for that I respect the based stoic ivans.

Russia has a structurally poor economy. They rely too much on oil which as we have seen doesn't work out too well when prices fall. However, I don't think that Russia will collapse.
Russia is too big for its britches, and always has been. It will never be the greatest country in the world. If they became a bit less belligerent and reformed their economy they could have a good relationship with the West, however, that is pretty unlikely. As for whether they could ever become a superpower, I have no idea. I think they could one day become far wealthier than they are now if corruption is kept in check and the west/Russia decides to work together, but I still believe China is going to become the power in the east very soon.
