The Visigoths attempted to cross the Danube while fleeing the Mongols. The Roman legions prevented them from doing so but there was a public backlash and the legion officers involved lost their jobs. The Eastern Roman emperor allowed the Visigoths to cross provided they lay down their arms. In return for their allegiance they were given some shitty land to farm. The Eastern Roman emperor then armed the Visigoths and incorporated them into the auxiliary. The Visigoths then betrayed Rome, killed the Eastern emperor, and sacked a bunch of cities in the East and West. This softened up the empire and the Huns finished the job.

Rome could have been saved by keeping out the filthy, treacherous, Visigoth barbarians instead of taking them in as refugees.

Remain a republic.
>inb4 m-muh land area, muh pax romana
Land area that drained Roman resources, more citizens from all across the empire that destroyed the Latin identity, emperors being assassinated left and right by either those who sought their position or their guards when they started fucking everything up. As interesting as it is to read roman history post republic you have to admit that they most likely would have been more stable if they had kept power with a senate and reserved emergency dictator powers for, you know, an emergency and not for the rest of their civilizations history

Intensify the war effort in all directions using the money taken from the previous ruling class
Genocide in most conquered lands to avoid treacherous and vengeful barbarians unless they show strong signs of integration and romanization
Conquer British Isles fully, expand north into Scandinavia and up and est to Ural mountains
Down south into the Sahara and sub-Saharian Africa
East towards fully annexing the middle east and central Africa until India

>>
>>70458672
They needed to get their house in order. Roman civil wars were the real cause of a lot of their problems, along with general instability at the top.

People on /pol/ will tell you that the barbarians at the gates were the problem when really it was a completely different situation from today. The peregrinus were gradually becoming accepted as Romans, just as the Latins had eventually become accepted as such after several civil wars and social changes. By the later period, some of Western Rome's greatest generals and patriots like Stilicho and Aetius were from far-flung provinces of the Empire. Just a couple hundred years back these defenders of the realm would have hardly been considered "Roman" at all.

In some ways, you can argue that the Empire was saved and the real change is that the importance of Rome itself was diminished. for one thing, it's clear that the empire needed to be divided into separate states since it was too large, unwieldy and unmanageable for a single Emperor to rule. That's exactly what happened and the Eastern part of the Empire ultimately did quite well. The Western part was beset by too much instability.

Utterly indefensible/10

Pannonian flatlands north of the Danube would be subjected to constant raids by horse fuckers and a waste of money. And at the time, Hungary, Austria and Bohemia were pretty poor and sparsely populated.

Secondly, Egypt was both the breadbasket and largest single source of revenue for the empire, along with being a trading port to India and China. Abandoning it would be suicidal. Similarly with Syria and Asia Minor, who were also large, heavily populated and wealthy centers.

1) Create and push the "Roman demos". People are to feel and identify as Roman with loyalty to the concept of rome and as much as possible not to people, generals or regions. Conqured regions must have their own identity suppressed and have roman identity and loyalty substituted.

2) Consolidate power. If people wish to conquer beyond the borders they have to go on their own without legion backing. Maintain good relations with the nations they establish but don't overstretch such that you cannot maintain internal order.

3) Export roman identity rather than rely on unsustainable expansionism. With luck, barbarians will want to join of their own will when hearing about rome rather than submission.

4) Develop sustainability in the economy and structure for public life. I.e.: develop society such that people can combine: Work, child rearing and educaiton (roman values, roman identity).

5) Mandatory service in the military to build character, patriotism and have local levies who can defend villages from barbarians.

"The History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why, and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question 'How can we eat?' the second by the question 'Why do we eat?' and the third by the question 'Where shall we have lunch?"

The final question is the problematic with all civilizations,Rome was no exception. We can only hope for the longevity the current western civilization. Although, there is only downhill after this degeneracy phase, sorry to tell you that guys.

Humans are fucking amazing and full of potention,no doubt about that. I am worried that our western civilization will implode from the degeneracy it has created. That is a factor that is more dangerous by a couple of order of magnitude. We live in a dark world, corrupted and weak roam the Earth. prevent Caracalla giving the citizenship to everyone

it literally killed the recruitment for legions and paved the way for the barbarization of the Roman Army, then Romans found themselves with only barbarian soldeirs and got obviously destroyed

citizenship in exchange of serving in the army was a core element of Roman greatness

you contribute to the Roman cause-> you get the citizenship and a piece of land for yourself and your family, thus enjoy what you protected so far

once everyone became citizen, nobody had any reason to enlist anymore

erm... no. commodus withdrew from germania when the war was winnable and then spent his entire career fighting giraffes in the arena and killing people who offended him. his assassination marked the end of the pax romana and ignited the year of the five emperors. marked the end of the emperor as a uniting force for the senate/army and signaled the beginning of emperors who were only loyal to the army. gibbons puts commodus' reign as the start of the fall of the empire.
>>
>>70458800
They were cruel but they were also very smart. Their culture was very strong, it probably saved them from being defeated by Hannibal.

Boudica was a queen of a province in britain and when her husband died he had it in his will to give his lands to both the romans and his wife, sort of joint custody. the romans came in and tried to take her palace or something and then flogged the queen and raped her daughters when she objected to her treatment. The queen then organized a revolt which is justified. She then amassed tens of thousands of troops 80k+ and went pillaging roman towns etc, a force of 10k romans went to stop her and their generals speach before the battle was:
"Ignore the racket made by these savages. There are more women than men in their ranks. They are not soldiers—they're not even properly equipped. We've beaten them before and when they see our weapons and feel our spirit, they'll crack. Stick together. Throw the javelins, then push forward: knock them down with your shields and finish them off with your swords. Forget about plunder. Just win and you'll have everything."
The romans then utterly crushed her and only lost 400 or so men while killing around 80k

it says something about their discipline and courage if u ask me

Incorrect. NK had no nukes for the longest time. Nobody is willing to pay the immense cost of war with NK, nor deal with the fallout, both literal and political, of using nukes against them. Terror-bombing (the WW2 term) is a big no-no. So the situation is: not worth it.

There are so many things that contributed to its fall that it's almost like God wanted it that way, and it took him way longer than he expected.

Besides, I think what really killed Rome forever isn't the deposition of the last Roman Emperor, but the Gothic wars, ironically started by the ""Roman"" empire itself from the east.

Not so much that, generally the West just started falling behind in comparison to the East. Constantinople was built upon a brilliant area to have trade, and as such Rome became less prevalent as a city. The West generally suffered more from plague and other diseases, unlike the East, which managed to keep a huge population until the plagues of Justinian. East more centralised than West. Honorius being an absolute moron and executing Stilicho. Generally just built up until the West didn't deserve to survive any longer

There was a forged document which stated that the eastern Emperor had given full power of the west to the Roman church or something, a claim that was made mostly to legitimize the >H>R>E since the pope back then had crowned the >H>R>E Emperor as the Emperor of the West.

The West was just plagued with shit - literally. Corruption, disease killing off huge amounts of the population, foederati being required to replace the depleted Roman population. Not much it could do in those circumstances.
>>
>>70474880
??
I'm just explaining the reason for the forgery, it was made to give the pope an authority he didn't have.
>>
>>70474970
The Pope has authority to lead the Church, he simply gave the Church's approval and legitimacy to the reigning king as opposed to de-legitmizing it.
>>
>>70475223
Yes but according to the forgery he had been given more authority than just that, in particular civil/political authority over the whole WRE.

In Italy the Ostrogoths, led by Theoderic the Great, killed and replaced Odoacer, a Germanic soldier, erstwhile-leader of the foederati in northern Italy, and the de facto ruler of Italy, who had deposed the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, Romulus Augustulus, in 476. Under Theoderic, its first king, the Ostrogothic kingdom reached its zenith, stretching from modern France in the west into modern Serbia in the southeast. Most of the social institutions of the late Western Roman Empire were preserved during his rule. Theodoric called himself Gothorum Romanorumque rex ("King of the Goths and Romans"), demonstrating his desire to be a leader for both peoples.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Hispanic Emperors, are in fact, Italic Emperors, or to be more precise about it, foreign born Italic Emperors. Being born in Imperial lands does not imply being a foreigner by itself, as many colonies outside senatorial Italy were merely just places where patrician families would retire. We are talking about ~100 years before the Caracalla's edict, so it would've been basically impossible to have not just non-patrician citizens but even free non-citizens getting anywhere near the position of Emperor.

They fucked Persia in the ass as well many times when they weren't retarded about it like with Crassus.
Caesar himself IIRC wanted to head there for his next target, it would've been really interesting to know how he would've performed hadn't he be killed.

Point is war against China or India would have been disastrous. If they had a competent leader they could defeat Persia after a prolonged war. Caesar marching on Persia would be very interesting however.

Yes I guess but consider that if full blown expansionism was to be the leading cause of the empire, by the time they reached China they would've learned a lot, especially from the Persians themselves about cavalry, motherfucking horse archers and so on. It's what they did after all since the early days, study the strengths of their enemies and adopt them, perhaps improving on them, like they did with Carthage's naval techniques.

The Thervings were probably allowed to cross at or near the fortress of Durostorum.[12] They were ferried by the Romans in boats, rafts, and in hollowed tree-trunks, and "diligent care was taken that no future destroyer of the Roman state should be left behind, even if he were smitten by a fatal disease," according to Ammianus Marcellinus.

Normally barbarian tribes were split up and put all sround the empire. This time it did not happen because the romans needed more cheap soldiers.
>>
>>70458672
The collapse we all know about didn't just suddenly happen when Rome fell to barbarians.

Roman culture, architecture and customs continued on for a good 200 years before it became unsustainable after the economic crippling done by the Vikings and then the Mudslimes. By 1000AD Roman civilization and its advancements was all but dead, its knowledge entirely lost. Christianity had little to do with the economic collapse of Europe. Its art and architecture was shit because of the basic fact that Europe was poor as fuck and couldn't afford nicer things, which lead to radicalized beliefs in order to survive. There was constant war, and you couldn't have a Michelangelo exist because someone like him would've probably been drafted into some army to fight and die, like 99% of the men of that time. It was either that or work the fields. Not study in the decadent halls of a fancy university.

In contrast, China had this happen multiple times to its empires. The Han, Qin, Ming. Except they didn't have mudslimes economically crippling them because the Chinese were very privileged to be sitting on extremely abundant land (despite what Jarred Diamond thinks) in a relatively acceptable climate.

Europe is a shithole and has few natural resources that anyone really wants. This is precisely why Roman culture/civilization didn't continue on through another empire or kingdom, unlike Chinese culture which endured multiple dynasties, empires and warlords.

Europe's only saving grace was through knowledge and colonization. This is why Europeans are the smartest in the world. It couldn't get rich by selling cash crops. Only through its innovations and technology could it advance past the Chinese. And so, that's where we are now and why the rest of the world lags behind. If Europe found itself in a more resourceful plot of Earth, we would probably still be stuck in the 17th century.
