There's a few reasons for this that I've seen:
1. Ales are quick and cheap
2. Porters are extremely expensive but still fairly cheap to make and they have a bunch of girly ingredients thrown in as advertising
3. IPAs are also fucking easy and also really fucking trendy
Lagers take a lot more time and energy to produce and most of the mainstream breweries already sell them. Porters and IPAs have some marketing advantages. Remember that they need to refrigerate lagers and they can take 3x as long as an ale to make. Ale is fast and also pretty primitive in ingredients and technique, alongside being valuable and tasty.
Lager is not economical for small companies because it's fairly advanced stuff.

In General, both Canadian and US beer is of very poor quality.
You can find good stuff, but the major brewing companies worldwide are just marketing specialists selling subpar crap.
