Socially conservative people are hostile towards Athiests. Liberals are more accepting of them and athiests feel more comfortable being openly athiest in liberal places. Conservatives in the US especially do incredibly retarded things in the name of Christianity like try and teach creationism in biology. They lean left because of social issues, not because of economic ones.
Democratic party is also way more willing to pander. Obama referenced Athiests in his speeches multiple times. Republicans still treat them like scum of the earth.
