The South did secede over slavery... but the North was not threatening it at all.
In fact, Lincoln offered the Corwin Amendment to enshrine slavery, and he was willing to compromise over it for the duration of the war.
What the North REALLY wanted was Southern tax revenue through protective tariffs, so that they could fund corporate welfare and exterminate the Indians.
Most of the men who fought for the Confederacy just wanted to protect their homes from Sherman et al., and did not own slaves.

This burger pretty much has it right. The United States had much less control over their citizens and more stringently followed the constitution before the civil war. Lincoln and Marx have documented correspondence between each other and Lincoln started the leftist war machine you see before you today.
