Post WWI pretty much looked the same with an absence of German colonies. After WWII to build social welfare states in Europe they had to drop off the colonies. People forget that colonies were actually expensive and a net drain on the economy of the mother country. Look at things like the Beveridge Report and how it influenced post war politics in the UK. Basically Gandhi didn't do shit for the poos in the loo, it was just the UK wanting to off load an expensive hobby.

I agree, part of the idea of colonialism was to modernize and spread European culture across the world. It would open markets, allow untapped resources to be used, infrastructure to be created, and many other things. The mother country would teach the colonies how to function and eventually, at some unknown time, the country could rule itself. Unfortunately, it didn't work like that. Africa I think is the perfect example of shit getting much worse. The natives are incapable of functioning in the modern nation state model.
Like you, I wonder how different countries would be if they stayed under colonial control for at least another 100 years or so. Oh well, they're "free," but all the worse for it. Decolonization was and still is a fucking mess.
