Valve made a lot of decisions to make money and rapidly grow the market share, that's for sure. My issue is that you're making it sound like the game itself was ruined or profoundly altered and I don't think that's the case. Battlefield and Fallout are really good examples of making a game more casual friendly only to make more money. Valve didn't sell out, they literally got others to buy in.

I believe to a great extent that my theory is correct, but it might be the case that you are correct, and that nature is taking it's course, and I only noticed it a little bit. Although, I did notice that way back in the day, gamers were a lot rougher and no-holds-barred with their brutality. Now, it seems to be very 'clean' and 'correct' type of banter, it's very boring. But that's just an observation of mine, I find it hard to sit down and focus on video games these days.
