I don't own a gun because I live in a state with a government who can hardly control its own members but still feels the need to implement baseless laws around gun ownership. A majority of the Irish population are also brainwashed into believing owning guns is a taboo thing and is only for "crazy americans", and the right to defend yourself doesn't exist.
I can own a gun here. I'd have to spend months trying to convince a police chief that I deserve a gun license, which would mean joining a gun club and spending €300 a month to sit in a room full of people who shoot once a year and use it as a social place to drink every other day. I'd only only be able to buy €4000 hunting shotguns and hunting rifles and keep them in timelocked guncases where I need to contact the local police station everytime I intend to take the gun out, and be okay with someone coming to do random checks to make sure the gun cabinet hasn't been tampered with.
I would own a gun if it wasn't such a hassle or worthless investment in this country, I'd go to prison for defending myself with it because it's illegal under all circumstances to use a gun for that reason here.

If you're in the wilderness a gun is an enormously useful practical tool. You can shoot animals that are trying to kill you, including people. You can also hunt animals to provide food for yourself. You can use it as a sturdy club, you can break it down for steel and springs, you can fire shots to alert rescuers, you can break down ammo to start fires, etc.
If I were stuck in the wild I would want a gun, a hatchet, and a good metal pot.
Yeah, guns are for shooting stuff. There are myriad things to shoot that aren't defenseless people. Just because you live in the suburbs and get your vegan pizza from the local store and depend on the local police for protection doesn't mean that everyone lives like you or has your needs (or lack thereof).
