only because anytime an economy was threatened by immigration the borders were closed. Look at USA in the early 20th century as soon as immigration grew too much to handle and there was little benefit due to the rapid industrialization of USA reducing the need for manual labor.

Sweden is doing great and has in the later years grown much more than in the last 10 years. It still has way more money per capita than America and more equally distributed. German industry have also been given a boost now, at least in stock prices.
