My parents certainly don't MISS the old crime-ridden New York, but they do fondly remember that, because it was so much harder to make it there, the quality of people was much higher. You had to really WANT to be there and you had to have some level of street smarts.
Now, NYC is a safe, accessible city, and it's filled with softies, clueless tourists and on the weekends it becomes a playground for drunk suburbanites. I'm the same poster, just left the house. Vast majority of the Bronx is poor Puerto Rican/Dominican and black neighborhoods, not much too see. Some nice spots are Riverdale which is a Jewish/Irish neighborhood, Woodlawn which is majority Irish (even a large illegal Irish population), Morris Park which is a middle class Italian neighborhood (though it is turning more and more Albanian), and the Eastern part of the Bronx has some nice neighborhoods like Country Club, Pelham Bay, Throggs Neck and City Island (which is like a New England fishing village in NYC). You have Fordham University which is right smack in the middle of the boro so you have college kids surrounded by these poor neighborhoods. The strip of Arthur Ave (Little Italy of the Bronx even though I think Morris Park is more fitting of the name) with all of the old Italian markets and restaurants is pretty much the only area you will find a bunch of White people on a Bronx street in the middle of a poor neighborhood. You also have Yankee Stadium (which is in the South Bronx go a street or two over and you're in basically the worst part of NYC), Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and Van Cortland Park. Not much to do/see in the Bronx. It's mostly poor residential neighborhoods with some nice spots sprinkled in.
