People always compare our future to 1984, saying that's how we'll end up...but does anyone else think a Brave New World scenario is more likely?

The western world seems run by hedonism and degeneracy: race mixing, drugs, prostitution, casual sex, video games, cartoons, sports, etc...all peasant hobbies or things that contribute to declining IQ/potential extinction of humankind

A 1984 type of fascism seems like it'd fit sandniggers or something but not America/the west
>>
Brave New World is already our new reality. We cannot do oxygen deprivation yet, so we have No Child Left Behind.

We cannot have soma we get oxycotin and xanax.

Characters in BNW willfully avoid information and truth so as to remain happy.

Sounds like modern western society to me.
>>
>>70429645
none of them, the future is freedom
>>
>>70429917
That's my point, 1984 doesn't fit the mold...BNW does however (for the west anyway)
>>
>>70429645
I think we kinda live in a New world of 1984 if you get what I'm saying
>>
>>70429645
both of them and more are in action every day in every place, in differing mixtures. throw in some ray bradbury while you're at it, like the pedestrian and F451. it's not just the government(s) doing it either.

>muh Brave New World vs. 1984

Could people please, PLEASE stop making this comparison? I'll say it just once more:

They're both right.

Why? Because both wrote about things happening during their lifetimes. Science fiction is never meant to be a genuine prediction of the future. It's fiction about current day issues amplified by technological and societal change. Both 1984 and Brave New World show blown up versions of things THAT WERE ALREADY HAPPENING. Huxley saw the growing importance of entertainment, while Orwell saw the powerful getting more and more influence over people's personal lives.

Similarly, there's the novel The Continuous Katherine Mortenhoe, about reality TV, where one of the main characters literally has camera's for eyes, and acts like a voyeur. This doesn't mean that the writer predicts that's how reality TV will be made. It's a metaphor for its nature, and its possible influence.

>we'll end up in 1984
Motherfucker we ARE in 1984. Everything that happens in that book has a parallel to the U.S. today.

Combination of both. On one hand the media feeds us fear, on the other it feeds us contentment and complacency.
>>
>>70429917
We don't quite have the biologically engineered from birth caste system yet. That was an arguably more important part of the book than the hedonism and people forget about it.

In reality we are having some degree of Brave New World and 1984 combined. Things will be censored in addition for drowning out truth into sea irrelevant bullshit.

We get our bread and circuses, but if that isn't enough they also have sticks to beat us with.
>>
Wow what a great and original insight. Do you also think that Idiocracy predicted future?
>>
>>70430995
>one vs the other

Brave New World is for the proles and 1984 is for the outer party. 1984 only glanced at the proles for a brief moment, and found them to be distracted to the point of senselessness. It was basically gazing into one book from the other.

Anyway both are satire to demonstrate a corrupt society, which is what we have.

It's an obvious mixture of both. You see things that happen in both books happening now.
>>
>>70432317
This. People always forget that the MC of 1984 was a relatively high-ranking government drone, and the entire point was that all of the surveillance and control focus was placed on people like him.

The proles were left alone because they couldn't give a shit about the government.

>>
>>70432552
Not really what I was talking about. BNW had a 5 tiered caste system that was engineered by making changes to fetuses, which were no longer conceived naturally but in test tubes. The government got to control the rare few to become geniuses, the average people, the retards, etc. This clearly hasn't happened yet on the real world but genetic engineering will come soon.
>>
>>70430995
So, essentially - it's not one of that's happening, it's both of them.
Fuck.

We're already seeing it in Europe.
>>
>>70433254
I read the book, and it's certainly coming in countries like India and China, who embrace caste systems and don't give a fuck about human rights.
>>
>>70433072

>>
I was thinking, today, just how much we are becoming like "Demolition Man." The censoring of speech at every turn, music is shit and is over commercialized (might as well be commercials. Restaurant chains everywhere, all serving similar things. Peaceful, anti-violent/anti-bullying culture. I could go on and on.
>>
>>70429645
To be affected by Fascism , you don't need to necessarily live in a totalitarian state.
>>
We're currently living in a Brave New World but 1984 will be our future

>More and more militarized police
>More power is going into a select few corporations to the point where they run the country
>Listening in to every call and text we make
>PC will make opposing opinions illegal to say

If you want a 1984 scenario just look at Britain today
>>
>>70430115
Kek. Keep telling yourself that.
>>
>>70433804
They're two different mechanisms built for two different sections of society.

There was a part of 1984 where the protagonist felt any hope of escaping tyranny depended on the proles, because the outer party had been conclusively defeated. So he went and tried to talk to some proles. They didn't seem to understand a word he was saying, nor did they appear to care at all about the government and its dealings.

1984's worst abuses only affected a small minority of the population. Proles being locked up alongside outer party members seemed entirely fearless, even talking back to the guards rudely.

Yes, literally everyone who ever compares the two.

That's a fucking shit picture and you should delete it. In 1984 the proles had access to all types of entertainments, from sports to porn. It's just that th MC wasn't a prole but a party member.
>>
>>70429645

It's a horrible mix of both where you get a visit from the police for saying bad bads and no one cares because they're too busy watching reality TV.
>>
>>70432317
>>70432967
This. BNW is treatment the prole masses get, while 1984 is what politicians & those involved in the beast of the government system experience.
>>
Huxley was the most generous and gifted writer of past century if you believe in humanity. A true progressive. "Island" are a real class in build a strong civilization. Brave New World show us that our style of work and our style of "Carpe Diem" may take off our better features as humans. He write a lot about religiosity and his essays are a tremendous contribution in our days. The books of Aldous Huxley will enlightening anyone interested in moral, conscious, civilization.

we live in a society where both systems are combined to a degree.
>>
>>70438178
Huxley was a smart and had a wonderful idea on what was/is wrong with society but he's not a really great writer. Brave new world was better edited than most of his stuff but his syllogisms where long as shit and hard to follow.

BNW isn't some revelation about the west, it's pointing out a theme as old as civilization. The masses have been by and large, willfully ignorant drones through most of history."panem et circences" was coined in 100 AD.
