Hardest part is employment, and juggling your Visa, then getting 'permanent residency.' You can do all this if you have a stable job and good prospects. I emigrated in 2009, got my citizenship last year, i think the fastest you can get it is 5 years. The red tape seems extreme, but if you have all the proper documents and information it moves quite fast. As far as expenses, i'd say $5000 (AUD) all up, if you've got a job you can pretty much cover yourself / wait it out until you can afford all the forms and applications.
I'll say it again though, the hardest part is keeping stable employment, a lot of employers will rake you over the coals and threaten / treat you terribly because if you're unemployed for too long your visa is up in smoke and you're back to America. I would also recommend if you come here and do end up with a job, try enroll in University and pay for like 1 course a semester, i talked to a fair few migrants / immigration agents and that's a good signal to the people handling your application that you have plans to put down roots so to speak and be a contributing member of society.
But like i said, i came here 6 years ago. I don't know how much the initial stages have changed, seems like they're clamping down on all sorts. Try looking into 457 Work Visas if you're skilled, or they have a Visa that lets you stay a year if you work for at least 6 months out of the year (I, and most Backpackers use that one), if you spend your whole year hunting work and can find a stable employer who will vouch for you to extend your stay those 4 years will go really quickly.
