Work can be hard to find. The mainland likes to say that we are inbred and so on, that may be the case but that is a problem that you can find in rural parts of the country like in NSW. Though I also think that the joke comes from the fact that most of the people outside of the two main cities tend to be pretty stupid, we have a huge illiteracy rating which is mostly semi-illiteracy. Another downside I would probably say is that it can very dull here at times, its very much the place for the melancholic introvert types. It can also be very dull in that it can lull you into complacency, we have a lot of people on welfare here in some areas and we did at one point have the highest abuse of morphine per capita in the country. I think it is similar to what people say about Washington state in that its misty and has ancient forests and has some lefties. Though lefties here only circulate in the university areas and well developed suburbs which are quite a small population. Overall the people here a nice, they will say hello to you on the street most of the time, its safe to go out at night, there isnt much of a police presence either. Work may be a difficult thing to come across as well.
This makes the place sound terrible but I really like it here, its got clean air, clean water and the people are friendly (so long as they are not drinking and you dont admit to being a greenie in a rural area).

I am glad you liked the sound of it. Tasmania is the state where the Pt. Arthur Massacre happened which was the single event which is responsible for the stringent gun laws across the country. It depends on what firearms they are and what the rules are for importing firearms into the country are, I am not too sure about them myself. Most people are not radically against guns but we don't have much of a gun culture, there is more of one on the mainland where there is more of a farming culture and heritage which is where guns were typically always used in the past and that stands for today. (at least there was this week which may have been because there was a televised debate over potentially making the gun laws more stringent.)
