I thought I was the shit and muh science could answer all questions in life and I was so smart and whatnot. Well guess what, my life was total shit until I returned to church at now age 22 at the start of the year. It too me some time but I finally realized for a fact that God's not dead.
I would like to apologize on behalf of all Atheists to:
1) Other Christians who I offended with atheism dogma
2) My church who I left and did not even visit for Holidays.
3) Jesus. He died for me and I turned my back on Him for a good portion of my life.

If you're going to approach the matter from an Epicurean standpoint, then you have to consider that suffering is a product of free will. (Even if you personally reject the notion of a free will.) Humans are free to commit evil or good. That is not to say they always make the better choice but this does say at least the choice is there. You're placing the problem of evil on God rather than on the acting agent, and the acting agent is is responsible for his own actions and the consequences which follow. Starvation and genocide are arguably more often than not the product of human actions.
Compare this to parenthood. You brought a child into this world without them explicitly asking you to. Do you coddle them to attempt to reduce the amount of suffering they will experience? No. Doing too much will make the child dependent on you, and once you're gone, your child will be chewed up by reality. Instead, you must step aside and allow the child to grow and learn. That's what a loving creator would do, too.

I'm with /pol/ on everything but this. I will never crawl back to the poison that is fundamentalist religion. It causes nothing but pain and suffering for everyone involved. I was a preacher for three years in a church full of elderly people desperate for something to live for. I gave them what they wanted, and they died with a smile on their face believing in a place with no suffering. I still have nightmares wondering if I was a monster for giving them what very well could be false hope. Even worse, what if that version of Christianity (or the religion as a whole) is wrong, and I lead these people to an eternal damnation as a result? Why must we live on faith alone?
