Xenophobia isn't necessarily the best word, they just see the world differently than westerners. Ideas like individualism, liberal democracy, cultural diversity, a sense of duty to the disadvantaged, etc... are largely western values. Western countries see their way of life as one that should be spread around the world, whereas Asian countries see their way of life as something that is uniquely theirs and cannot be produced elsewhere.
They do not care to be accommodating to others or to strive for a more open, diverse society because they value stability, unity, and national identity more than westerners due to confuscian values and centuries of each country thinking their ways are the best. Unlike the west they never grossly over reached their boundaries in order to spread influence and so they don't feel guilty for things like imperialism; similarly, countries with imperial pasts, like Japan, do not feel an obligation to those countries it hurt like westerners do.
