American here thinking of immigrating to Canada. Work in IT currentl. Thinking of Calgary for several reasons but want to get some unbiased input. Thoughts from residents and visitors? Canadian and other opinions welcome. I guess I'm most curious about what the worst aspects are of this city specifically.

>>
Alberta is broke from the death of oil. Good time to buy housing though.
>>
It's fucking cold there m8
>>

Pro: It's not Toronto.
Con: It's still the fucking Prairies. You've had more interesting farts in your life than the three provinces combined.
>>
It's turning into Detroit. Don't go there
>>
Currently in Las Vegas, so weather may be a shock. But I have lived in more snowy mountain west areas before (Salt Lake City, Reno)

Is the pic I posted one of these "once every 10 years" types for calendars kind of photo of what the city looks like?

Calgary looks like that in the summer

It's not bad, better than Edmonton anyway but that's not a very high bar.

if u speak mandarin, youll fit just right in buddy.
it is a nice city tho, close to the mountains.
>>
Tons of unemployment right now because the economy is tied to the price of oil. Being close to world class nature is nice though.
>>
>>70390509
A bunch of my friends moved out there for work and they all turned into redneck assholes. If you don't mind the cold, rednecks and stampede bullshit, I guess it's worth a look? Vancouver is nice. It's full of Chinese people but the winters are mild and it's generally a nice place to live.

Calgary hasn't looked that good for the past 15 years. Now it's just dead vegetation only, less than a third of that water flowing through the river, and random chinks crawling around the place now.

Don't waste your time coming here, it's going to become Detroit in a few years.

Isn't Vancouver ridiculously expensive to live in, due to the Chinese purchasing tons of property to offshore their cash?

White people are moving to the suburbs.

Chinese people will follow because the city center will become Chinese ghetto, and they will be like "What if our little Ping Wang can't learn English because he speaks Mandarin with other Chinese kids all day at school?"

Then the cycle will repeat itself.

younger generations aren't moving out because it's too expensive to buy any property. Some are buying condos with their girlfriend of 5 months because that's really the only way people can move out. The average price for a house here now from what I heard is $430,000. they're not even brand new homes they're complete shit.

We're broke cause oil is crashing. The people that came here because of the oil aren't leaving. We have little to no IT jobs. (I know I'm studying Computer Science here). A bunch of my friends have lost their jobs or have moved away. I was beaten almost to death by wiggers in North East Calgary hopped up on meth and the police couldn't do anything about it because they have no power anymore because of Libtards. The police also couldn't do anything because I wasn't a member of a minority. I am a white blonde male. We have a gigantic population of natives (the niggers of the north drunk all the time). We're full of immigrants that are starting to segregate themselves and breed an intense hatred for the white man. We are becoming extremely libtarded and seriously need help. My car was stolen from in right in front of my house.
I was born and raised here and I am horrified of what it has become.

Calgary used to be a home of great hard working people. We were so friendly and good that we kept our doors unlocked.
On the plus side: We are the home of Stephen Harper. The holy god of Conservatism in Canada. The South West of Calgary hasn't been completely corrupted yet. We have the most Conservatives of anywhere else in the Country. Be mindful that Canadian Conservatism is a lesser form of American Conservatism. We have the largest population of Americans here by percentage of any city in Canada. Most every cowboy and Northern wilderness movie made today was made here. Calgary is a beautiful and clean city still as compared to... most any other city. Our Police are great and wonderful people. Most people who have been here for at least 20 years are great and wonderful people. The mountains are very close by. We are hard working people. Our whole culture is based around working hard and being as friendly and good as possible. My house was in the 2013 flood and there were hundreds of volunteers who came to my house and helped out. About 60 of them were from a "Good Samaritans" church and are the most incredible people ever, brought food and ... just the greatest people. I wish my city would go back to the way it was.

With Trudeau in power and the NDP in command of our province were are guaranteed to become a poor uncivilized pile of garbage.

it's something no one with ability will do anything about.
If a politician decides to introduce laws to curb foreign investment to weaken the housing market, every home owner who just 'lost' $100,000 will never vote for their party again.

At this point, all the 20 somethings can hope for is a housing market collapse

Since this is becoming Canada general, have more.

Pic related gets more scary when you put it into context:

>Canada's military spending is 1% of its GDP
>Canada's GDP is 1.827 Trillion
>Military spending is 18.2 Billion
>Proposed Budget cut for 2017-2018 is 1.319 Billion

Literally cutting a 14th off the budget in a single fell swoop. Never mind the 90 million cut the year before.

But somehow we have the money to blow 300 million on:
>expand intake of Syrian refugees
>reduce application time of Syrian refugees
>admit more Syrian refugees as permanent residents
>>
Have some more info about our Syrian refugees:

"Most of the 21,000 refugees who have made it to our borders, were not housed in camps, they were, they had been living in theatre for a number of years, renting apartments, so I just want that for precision. They're not housed in camps administered by the UNHCR."
>Martin Bolduc, CBSA Program Branch Vice-President

Bolduc continues:

"I wouldn't be able to tell you the 21,000, how many, but very, very few came out of the camps, most of the people were already living in, in the countries where we are operating in."

And here's Liberal MP Boris Wrzesnewsky on the matter:

"Where they were actually located, whether they were in towns or actual camps, we didn't actually set goals where we're extracting refugees from. We set a goal of a certain number of refugees that we would bring in to remove the load from those frontline countries and also to help our European allies because many of those refugee camps were pretty full."

INTRODUCING A BANK RECAPITALIZATION SCHEME

"To protect canadian taxpayers in the unlikely event of a large bank failure, the government is proposing to implement bail-in regime that would reinforce that the bank shareholders and creditors are responsible for the banks risks - not the taxpayers. This would allow authorities to convert eligible long term debt of a failing systematically important bank into common shares to recapitalize the bank and allow it to remain open and operating. Such a measure is in line with international efforts to address the potential risks to the financial system and broader economy of institutions perceived as 'too-big-to-fail'.

The government is proposing to introduce framework legislation for the regime along with accompanying enhancements to Canada's bank resolution toolkit. Regulations and guidelines setting out further features of the regime will follow. This will provide stakeholders with an additional opportunity to comment on the elements of the proposed regime."
pg. 223, liberal budget 2016

>yfw when you have money in the bank - you are technically a creditor of the bank
>yfw they can take this money as they need

Edmonton here, I like Calgary but its feeling some economic strain right now. What are your skills? I'm a mason/bricklayer and I make $30+/hr but quite a few of my friends are unemployed. It's a GREAT place to live but I could see someone new to the province having a hard time finding work without social connections. I am doing great right now but I can attribute that to growing up here my whole life.

This is an amazing place to live but currently it is a suboptimal time to move here. This is coming from an affluent 27yo Edmontononian who has operated in commercial, residential, and industrial construction my whole life.

Who knows though you could do just fine, life's a gamble.

No one really cares about immigrants - if they assimilate. Canada doesn't really push that so what you get is ethnic ghettos. Take Richmond for example,

Richmond:

54.6% Chinese
26.1% Not a Visible Minority
6.1% Filipino
4.4% South Asian
2.3% Mixed Visible Minority
1.7% Japanese
1.1% Southeast Asian
0.9% Korean
0.8% Latin American
0.6% Black
0.6% West Asian
0.5% Arab
0.2% Other Visible Minority

For the record "Not a Visible Minority" means:
>persons who gave a mark-in response of "White"
>persons who reported being Aboriginal
>persons who gave mark-in responses of "White and Latin American", "White and Arab" or "White and West Asian" with no write-in response classified as visible minority
>persons who gave a mark-in response of Latin American, Arab, or West Asian only, along with a European write-in response
>persons with no mark-in response who gave a write-in response that is not classified as a visible minority

Definition of Visible Minority is:
>persons who are non-Caucasian in race
>non-white in colour
>and who do not report being Aboriginal

Do you think that is assimilated? Its not. It became a functional satellite state. There was a ruling debacle a couple of years back that signs don't need to have any english or french on them. So you get tons of mandarin and cantonese only signs. You get people who practically never needing to speak english. You get homeowners being excluded from strata council meetings because they don't speak mandarin. You get that incident a few years back where they put a ban on white people applying to work at the fire department because they wanted to restructure it to "better represent the community".

No, its not assimilated and that is what people dislike.

>Forest lawn full of niggers

>Northeast is new baghdad
>Big stupid fuckin ring road where people tail gate you when you're already driving 140/100
>Ring road not actually a ring because the fuckin indians wont let them build on "their" land

>Nothing to do but go be the only white person at the mall
>Immigrant kids driving double the speed limit in bmws

>UofC
>Shitty river that eats drunk rafters

I'm personally thinking of moving anywhere else at this point. The NDP has the province by the fuckin balls because off all the "new canadians" Ontario fucks and union cunts in Edmonton and Calgary. The oil patch is in the shitter, all these shitty houses people built 50 years ago are worth half a million. Everything is tied to oil up here, even if your field has nothing to do with it employers are looking for reasons to get rid of people because they know they can get better employees for cheaper now that you can barely find work above minimum wage

Calgary is actually rather warm, and can get huge temperature swings in winter due to a west to east air flow over the mountains that compresses and heats the air.

Literally -30C to +12C in 24hrs.

On the other hand it's a shit town that hates car for some reason, so you are forced to live around the city but not in it.

See? THAT is a proper temperature. Drop the avg temperature of this place at least 10c and THEN you have a proper place.

>We usually get a week or two during the winter where it's around -10F

So you get colder weather then Calgary according to that. We get less then a week a year when it's below 0F here.

I'm a blonde male and I went to Richmond. I speak some Cantonese and I went to a supermarket there. They told me that I wasn't wanted there and asked why I don't go to one of my own people's stores.
>>
>>70399901
Oh yeah! West end, moving in a month to a brand new place, there's lots of things I don't like about this city but I can't think of anywhere else I'd have it better off.
>>
>>70400337
Its not ghetto, I was referring to its enclave nature, though in retrospect I could have used a better word.
>>

I've lived in Windsor and Halifax, currently living in Calgary. It's legitimately impossible for Calgary to ever get as bad as either of those cities. Oil is a boom-bust industry, there was a boom, we happen to be in a bust. If Iran and the Saudis start getting more aggressive with each other, fuck, it's back on.

This summer is going to be FUCKED in Alberta, forest fires every day and massive drought crop failures, when it hits +35 it's over for me

It was like 27 degrees C here today. Our winter was a cakewalk compared to what those suckers out east got.
>>
>>70400583
Fuck this place. I went and got AC when I moved down here. No other city I've ever lived in in Canada have I needed air conditioning to simply not fucking sweat in my own home.
>>
>>70400317
Most of winter is a day time high of -10C, which is warm. But a cold snap can push it down to -40C which is dangerously cold.

Overall however Calgary is much warmer than anywhere else east of the Rockies, but west of the great lakes due to the mountain passes and the winds.

A much nicer city to live in if you're not hipster trash is Edmonton. Although it's farther away from anything but more 'park land' biome. (park land is nasty short trees and scrub brush).

The smaller towns are either overrun with Indians that are like slightly more drunk niggers, or are hub points for German Commie Christian farmers that are like Mormons that are mean to people.
>>
>>70397531

It will be glorious.

With oil gone, our entire economy is propped up by real estate.

Construction companies, property management for foreign owners, real estate agents, companies that temporarily decorate your house with fancy furniture so you can get an extra $250,000 for it.

A homeowner thinks he's getting a good deal selling his house for $1 million, but the real-estate agent sets up three or four deals in mandarin on the same day. Hong buys the house for $1.2 million (a great deal! sold over asking!) then immediately resells it to Chang for $1.4 million, who sells it on to Zheng for $1.6 the same day. The original seller is oblivious because all the deal happens in chinese.

Of course, even if vancouver crashes to 50%, it will still be $500,000 for a rotten shitshack.

The Alberta NDP's approval ratings are utter shit though, everyone regretted it within a week of the election and you've already got people giving Notley death threats. People have been saying the same thing about 'new canadians' tipping the vote since the 80s, it never sticks. The PCs were running like a banana republic, they needed a hard election loss to smarten themselves up or to die and let the Wildrose take over. Either way the only thing the NDP is going to accomplish is cement another 40-50 years of one-party right wing statehood.

I heard somewhere that we are going to start taxing people from other countries an extra %150 or something. Because they just buy the house and never live in it so locals can't find a place to live.

problem i'm starting to see is that the american niggers are slowly moving in.

A few of the african migrants I know have had to deal with their kids because they have started interacting with the american niggers.

All they do is bring crime and degeneracy.

I don't mind immigration but ffs i should be only once every 10 years.

What are you talking about. Edmonton has much better "biome" then Calgary. That river valley is one of the best in north america.

And are you talking about fucking Mennonites? They are good people, they always help out and treat anyone nice as long as that person is living a good life. As in, if you're not a liberal douche with piercings or some other leftist bullshit.

>Is suicide the only option? Are there any trades still accepting apprentices?

Most are.

The downturn is a great culling of all the degenerates that have to get hired in boom times to meet demand. When it gets lean the worst employees go first.

But as most businesses know that it's cyclic they tend to still hire new people to train.

Clearly this depends on the trade, but even at the current oil prices I know that power engineer students are getting summer jobs that pay $25-$35 an hour. Welders are still taking in students because shit still breaks and a lot of jobs just become economical with at least two people working on it, even if one guy can't tell steel from copper.
>>
>>70400895

But that's racist!

Best post ITT. Amazing how people don't think last election was anything other than a spanking for cuckservatives especially after Redford...

I still voted conservative lol I just couldn't bring myself to do anything else even not vote.

I would have voted wild Rose had Danielle Smith not been such a naïve floor-crossing cuck. Spoiled the whole party and it was a shame even though those types of parties never take off here

The thing about P.Eng is that you don't just go straight for the plants or patch. The degree can get you into working at hospitals/for public education etc. You've gotta get firing time before the $25-$35/hr jobs will consider you or you gotta take shit hours. Family connections does make it easier though.
>>

>What are you talking about. Edmonton has much better "biome" then Calgary. That river valley is one of the best in north america.

The river valley is kinda shit, and the surrounding area is scrub trees and nasty brush. Pic related 10min outside of Edmonton.

>And are you talking about fucking Mennonites? They are good people, they always help out and treat anyone nice as long as that person is living a good life. As in, if you're not a liberal douche with piercings or some other leftist bullshit.

Hudderites.

Better than natives, muslims, niggers or the french but not great.

I'll agree with you, that river valley is really nice and has beautiful trees.
Our smart city planner decided to build our core right on the river so that when it floods we're all screwed.
The mountains are close to us though and we have fish creek... which is now tiny and flooded with shitskins.

Vancouver is completely cucked by the azns. I'm laughing out loud at the people in this thread complaining about Calgary having too many asian people, you guys haven't seen shit.

I mean fuck, the University of British Columbia are using student fees to fund the construction of an entire campus compound exclusively for the use of foreign asian students.
>>
>>70401519
>You've gotta get firing time before the $25-$35/hr jobs will consider you or you gotta take shit hours.
To be certified you need the hours, all the schools have a combined lab and industry placement to make 3rd class PEs in two years.

The 25-35 an hour jobs are summer jobs for students. Everyone gets shit hours in that everyone works shift work unless you work in a shopping mall or hospital, even then for hospitals they have shift work.

You don't need to know anyone other than people you meet while on your practicum placements. The shit people sink while the everyone gets job offers.

A 3rd class PE working oil, gas or coal will start at $37 + benefits and raise to $45 in two years.
>>
>>70401740

If you're sitting on a pile of dirty money that you need to get out of China, you'll be happy to overpay for real estate in a country that is too self-loathing to dare to enact any sort of capital controls, even if you might lose 15 to 20 percent when the market deflates.

It's not horrible, but It's cold and lacking in personality.

Albertans are constantly rambling on about how they are better, etc. But I'm not really sold on that.

Other places are more interesting, Calgary is just a modern generic, suburban type environment.

It is marginally more conservative, but for an American, it will still be annoyingly anti-american.

Save yourself some trouble and just go to Denver or something.
