This is clear for two reasons: the states as a united entity are supposed to be as libertarian as possible. The founders wanted most things to be decided by the states, and only the bare necessities for cohesion decided by the federal government.
Don't believe me? Google how many of the original thirteen colonies had provisions in their state governments that directly state something about Christianity. Virtually every single one did, whether it had to do with taxation for churches, for not allowing non-Christians, to punishing individuals who didn't go to church.
So while the UNITED states as a cohesive federal government was not founded on christianity, AMERICA certainly was, because America refers to everything within each state as opposed to its united federal agreements.
