Alberta is utterly fucked and here is why.
Even if oil does go back up to 100+ dollars it wont be for at least another 2 years. And when it does rebound people will still be hesitant to invest in oil sands projects which have supermassive capital costs. It will be seen as too risky. The political situation is even worse. Due to a lack of pipelines, alberta cant ship out the oil they produce fast enough, and the pipelines they do have pretty much only go to the USA. Having 1 customer is shit for business and there is a need to build more pipelines to reach new markets. As such, Alberta has been begging to build more oil pipelines for years but has been getting blocked by natives who have a shit load of power in british colombia and elsewhere (they can block projects even if it doesn't run through land that they own). Add in the fact that the liberals, a party that will never go to bat for alberta building more pipelines, is in power, and you will see that the situation is even worse. Oh yeah, another major political party in Canada, the NDP is outright debating right now if they should make it a party policy to make it illegal to further develop the oil industry. How eager do you think companies are to invest in alberta with noise like this?
The province is fucked. And its not just because of oil prices. Natives, environmentalists, and the government are all a part of the problem.
