I can't confirm or deny any rigging of things the Soviets sold to the West, but I do know that the Soviets tried many times to destabilise the US. However their efforts often failed because of their lack of understanding of American culture. One example was the Soviet attempt to frame J. Edgar Hoover as a homosexual. They also liked to forge letters to stir up racial tensions, like when they attempted (unsucessfully) to make King seem too lenient to whites and have him replaced with a radical like Stokely Carmichael. I also heard rumors that they funded the Black Panthers but I can't find a concrete source on that.

Absolutely these things happen. It is a shame when any government does this, but it is an unavoidable evil when humans run a government. But the last similar event to the Great Purges that I can think of happening in American history is the Salem witch trials. McCarthyism happened too but very few people died. And at least McCarthy was proved to be a fraud and later shunned. Overall the West (when I talk about the west I am trying to talk about the past 200 some years) was less zealous with their attempt to purge Communists than the Soviets were of purging Trotskyists.

Well, those are war veterans and Russians had troops there as well. My dad even was a paratrooper in Afghan, still he doesn't have some sort of passionate hate for the US or West. Actually most of the people who I know, friends and their parents, a lot of whom also served in various places, don't have this kind of passionate hate towards the West.
