I'm off the school of "read everything you can". When I went to " Sunday school " as a child the priests always told me that believing what is written in a book on the authority of that book alone is dangerous, and to read add much as possible on everything imaginable.

You can find this online and has a FAQ style. It's not bad for people trying to get a grip on basic ideas.
Of course I'd recommend the "Bhagavad-Gita as it is" by prabhupada, but remember to take any explanation as an interpretation rather than concrete.
I wouldn't recommend anything given to me by my grandmother or anything, those books are too specific, and probably unavailable in English.

The fundamental idea behind Hindu metaphysics, is that there is an pantheistic god named Brahman, who appears in several forms to his worshipers. That would mean that almost all gods invented by man are simply different aspects of Brahman. In a way one could also say that Brahman is the universe.
