Meh, don't know, don't care. The French military is absolutely based when commanded by competent individuals. Their military reputation has been tarnished by incompetent leadership for over 100 years.

Maybe in ww2 they were bailed out by the other allied powers but one of the reasons the French were so hesitant to focus on a more offensive military doctrine after the first world war was because of the massive casualties they suffered in the first. (i.e. Verdun) Let's not forget that one of the reasons the British and French were able to move so maybe of their troops out of Dunkirk was due to a French force holding off advancing German troops at the rear until the majority of allied soldiers were out of harms way. Yes, it was a shitfest after that for the French army but please give credit where its due.

what happened in Dunkirk is that Hitler never ordered a ground assault. Dunkirk was supposed to be flattened by the Luftwaffe but the Germans overestimated its effectiveness when it came to raw killing numbers

That's true, but in retrospect I still believe that was a smart move given how quickly the advancing German armed columns were moving relative to their supply lines/lines of communication. The German army as a whole was in danger of being outflanked at that point, putting the whole operation at risk. Guederians panzer units definitely needed a breather but it's interesting to speculate how the course of the war could have changed had they continued their advance straight towards the coast.
