There is nothing spooky about area 51 at all.
The reason it's so secretive is because it's for testing new aircraft and reverse engineering captured aircraft.
There's books written about how they would time takeoff and landings so foreign satellites weren't passing over and able to photograph the aircraft.
Think of it like this: If the stealth chopper used in the Bin Laden mission was spotted and everyone knew the US had a stealth chopper, Pakistan might have put some non-radar detection systems on the border and blown their cover during the op. It's a way of keeping a trick up your sleeve.
Also, the US government deliberately spread rumours of aliens as a cover story for secret aircraft.
