But this book and starship troopers book are very similar, but Forever War is a superior version of the two. The themes go much deeper and its triggers more emotion

It was meant as a joke. Yes, any normal person knows who Kinsey was, think there was even a bad movie with Liam neeson.
But it's funny to think of her as an author for some reason.

Penguin is fucking trash.
They try to Jew you in every way possible.

For example...
>grossly overprices their books
>use outdated translations from the 1800s because they're too lazy to do a new one that's more faithful to the original work
>spread books out over multiple volumes that can easily fit in one volume to force you to buy more books
>sometimes the work isn't unabridged and they don't tell you

Just read the reviews of Penguin books on Amazon. It's riddled with dissatisfied customers.

The only argument I've seen against The Bell Curve is literally the argument most prominently addressed in the book:

"But IQ tests only measure education and socioeconomic status!"

Regression analysis shows that IQ score (i.e. intelligence) acts as an effective predictor of certain behaviors and traits, independently of education, age, and SES.

Sort of a Boomer-tier ideology.
The ideas are cool, imo, and I think that the poor are usually dumb, but she focuses on class differences.
My dad once said to me when we were talking about the state of the country.
>"I sometimes wish the country would split in half, and the conservatives take one side, while the liberals take the other. . . kinda like Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged"
Meanwhile, a /pol/ack, and admittedly myself, would like to see the country split, but for a white country.
I'd say read it, the ideas are mostly applicably, but the principles of the book are not universally applicable to our time.

In the final chapter of the book, Socrates tells a story to the people he's been talking to this whole time about a myth of a warrior who was resurrected after dying in battle. The warrior told of a Heaven-Hell-Purgatory type system in which the "good" go to heaven for 10000 years, bad go to hell for for 10000 years etc.

>Basically the point of his philosopher ruling-class is that only philosophers can learn what is "good" because it is a very abstract concept. So the only way to ensure that one's people make it to "heaven" is by making sure they are "good" by enforcing philosophically sound laws.

Dude, none of those are good excuses.

You can literally read an entire book in one night if you don't dick around and shitpost on /pol/ or play games or whatever it is you do.
You can read The Prince by Machiavelli in like 3 hours only.
Most Shakespeare plays take only 3 or 4 hours to read.
You can read Animal Farm by George Orwell in like 90 minutes.

Get your shit together. I thought you Europeans were supposed to be cultured.
>>
>>70340880
Let me guess, you think "be yourself" is the best advice and you shouldn't change for anyone. That's just a lazy defeatist mindset.

Picking up chicks is a skill and you can learn it from successful people just like any other.

If you knew anything about the book you would know it doesn't even teach you how to pick up chicks. It teaches you to be a better, more alpha man so the chicks pretty much come to you.

That's a lot of strawmans.

The point I'm trying to make is that if you need a book to tell you to "Work out, not be autistic, have charisma and girls will come to you" then you're a lost cause.

You can't learn how to be alpha from a book. You're either alpha or not alpha.
If you have to read a book in order to have the revelation "Wow, maybe I shouldn't be a fat piece of shit and watch anime and then maybe I'll get a girlfriend," then you're off to a really slow start. This is something most intelligent guys realize at like 14 or 15.

What? That's not the story at all you cunt.

The actual story isn't about some random warrior being resurrected, first of all, it's about Odysseus and his soul after death.

Basically Odysseus is with a bunch of other souls in their sort of purgatory (the Greeks didn't really have a heaven or hell, just one underworld where 99% of souls went) and they're told that they've been chosen to be gifted life again in the physical world. So they go through the rituals of being given new lives, as follows:

>fate weavers lay out a bunch of different lives to pick from
>each one has a sort of sneak preview
>all the souls around Odysseus pick lives of rich aristocrats and such
>Odysseus in his wisdom picks the life of a humble farmer and family man
>after everyone picks their lives the fate weavers show them all the full extent of the ones they just picked
>normie's new lives are full of material luxury but also full of betrayal and misery. they regularly cry themselves to sleep and their wives betray them
>Odysseus' humble farmer life is calm, happy, and tranquil and his family is always there with him
>after everyone's done crying about the horrible fate they picked for themselves (except based Odysseus) the ushers of this purgatory start marching the souls across a vast desert completely devoid of water
>they go through the desert for a long time and when they reach the end of it they come to a little campsite by an oasis
>they are told that here is where they'll wait for resurrection, and that since they are so parched they may drink from the oasis of sleep, but only two handfuls or some small amount
>everyone starts drinking way more than two handfuls
>except based Odysseus, who restrains himself and rations out his two handfuls carefully throughout the night, making sure to not overdrink

>turns out the water makes your soul forget the memories of past life and drinking too much could make you forget not only your last life, but all lives before it
>by over-drinking the normies have doomed themselves to ignorance as the subtle wisdom derived from experiences in their past lives won't be there in their next one
>but since Odysseus only drank what they told him to he'll still have those latent memories, and will be gifted with natural wisdom in the next life
>as the water soothes them they all fall asleep and during that sleep are reborn back in the material world

The story isn't some allegory for Sha'ria at all you fucking retard, it's just a story Plato told to show why the wisdom of a philosopher was important. In this story Odysseus - who is a man that got to experience all walks of life and grew very wise from a life well-lived - was able to use his wisdom to see right through the material temptations of the lives they could pick and chose one that he knew wouldn't be the richest, but the happiest. Then he used his well-trained restraint to keep himself from overindulging in the water, despite his thirst. He's exhibits the same traits that philosophers of the time tried to cultivate.

"Attract Women Through HONESTY"
It tells you not to pander to women's wishes or even think about what women want. Just work on yourself, be a sincere guy, a valuable man. It's an anti pick-up book, if anything.

Remarkably accurate considering its age. Gutenberg has the version with Milman's commentary which clears up a few minor inconsistencies. An excellent read though and quite relevant to what's going on now. I can't recommend it enough, especially if you enjoy history.

I'm planning on making a thread about it later but it's late here. For now check out this chapter from the midway point of the books, at the end of volume 3. It is a departure from his usual style in that it summarizes the causes of the fall of the empire in the west without going into much detail essentially being a wrap-up of the previous 3 volumes. This is less historical and more philosophical than the rest but the parallels to modern societies are amazing considering the time gap and you can decide for yourself if his predictions came true or not.

If you don't mind your bible being in the form of a MASSIVE tome, then I'd recommend the Norton critical edition. Has introductions to every book and tons of annotations that help with weird colloquial bullshit that's strewn throughout the bible.

The one potential drawback is that it's not laid out in the traditional way with two columns per page and line breaks for every verse. It's all in paragraph form, which I find makes reading easier actually. Verses are still numbered.

Would disagree with that, I think it's an excellent defense of capital punishment. Primarily because he concedes that there is no way to prevent crime - something very few people do. And also because it agrees with using pain as a punishment, which is something I very much agree with, it's being conditioned into us as a deterrent for millions of years - why abandon it?

Anyway, always interesting to have differing opinions.

I like it its just not all anything new TO ME. /pol/ says this shit every day and everything in the book just sounds like common fucking sense it doesnt have as much impact on me.

I think forever wars message was about trying to know your enemy before starting war, which makes sense ***SPOILER***
When you find out the initial ship conflict was an accident and Mendela survives that one battle just to come back thousands of years later and see alien and human ships docked together.

I think the main theme of the book was time, specifically how one will return from war and nothing at home is the same and youre full of awful knowledge others are ignorant of. The most striking passage was when he had to say goodbye to the woman he liked and he knew that with time diliation she would be already dead to him as soon as her ship took off "As I watched her ship take off, it was like watching a coffin rattle into its grave"

That and Forever War is just much more grim feeling over all. Just my opinion

Mega based book by Spengler.

"Why do cultures commit suicide? Why are we witnessing a new great extinction of peoples? Why is the economic crisis really a spiritual crisis? Probing the inner workings of civilization in a tour d'horizon of cultural decline, Spengler argues that Europe's postnational, secular dystopia is a death trap, that the onslaught of modernity has plunged Islam into an even greater crisis, and that the destiny of nations is decided in the human heart, by religion. Christian America, in spite of its follies and gullibility, has the spiritual strength to restore the faith of the West. This book presents, in one comprehensive volume, the wide scope of Spengler's theories on Christianity, Islam, America, the financial crisis, horror movies, modern art, Israel, Tolkien's Middle Earth, tribalism, the global balance of power, demography, and sex in the twenty-first century. he global balance of power, demography, and sex in the twenty-first century."

Go take a decent trade course and keep your mouth shut at work unless it happens to come across a great subject that you might be able to drop something into the mixing bowl.

Philosophy, from what I found, is very much a solo quest. No university or group of men are going to help you with it. At best they might give some decent suggestions to read, but you're already getting a solid line-up in this thread.
Don't be afraid of the hefty sections at the library is what i'd say. Over a lifetime you can read the shelf, or over a lifetime you can make yourself a bias and stick with it arrogantly.

>philosophers of nowadays

The "philosophers" of nowadays would have been the laughing stock of Athens if they showed up and tried to force their garbage on Plato and Aristotle.

The philosophers which that anon and Plato are referring to aren't the limp-wristed sociologists and existentialists of today. Back then philosophy was all about logic, sturdy ethical foundations, and living well. Philosophy wasn't just something people discussed over fancy dinners, but was something that was expected to be lived as much as it was preached.

Marcus Aurelius was emperor of Rome. He was also a student of Stoic philosophy. Many consider him to be one of the fairest emperors Rome ever had, and his Stoic learning contributed to his fair hand.
