Now, this is from the point of view of someone who has worked alongside the U.S. military for many years.
From the Battalion level downwards, they are fantastic. Incredible NCOs and junior officer cadres make even the dumbest dindu into fearsome fighters. They fight with an earnest belief their cause is always just and that carries onto the battlefield.
Where shit gets fucked up is everything above that level. Once you get to brigade, division and corps level organizations, the politicking of careerists and bureaucratic mandarins ruins everything. Suddenly, the initiative is lost on the battlefield. the necessities of hardware and training take second place to political goals and people get killed because of the stupidest shit. The officers living in that stratosphere have a callousness about the lives of their men that I suppose comes from commanding a force that dwarfs my own country's army tenfold. Knowing that they have an almost unlimited supply of Good Ol' Boys, Midwestern kids, and city boys to recruit from, they don't particularly care if you get killed and it shows in their planning.
The most frightful experience for me was being placed under the command of a American Brigadier who was out to make a name for himself. It took a quiet call to Ottawa to stop his shenanigans.

In my personal opinion it is still the most capable fighting force on the planet that is pretty much unopposed.
